Arthur Schopenhauer’s “genius-philosophical and standing above all praise” (Jean Paul) work, The World as Will and Representation, was published in 1818 in Germany. The pessimistic philosophy of the “recluse from Frankfurt ” captivated many great minds.
Nietzsche wrote: “I belong to those readers of Schopenhauer who, after reading his first pages, know with certainty that they will read every page and listen to every word he utters. From the outset, I trusted him, and that trust remains as strong today… To put it clearly, though boldly and perhaps madly, I understood him as if he were writing for me.”
Tolstoy: “An unparalleled enthusiasm seized me while reading Schopenhauer’s works, and I experienced a spiritual pleasure unlike anything I had felt before… I believe Schopenhauer is the most ingenious person in the world…”
Wagner: “The time will come when Schopenhauer will become the standard of our thinking and knowledge.”
